In this project we face the challenge of planning a new city to meet
Alberta's and Canada's urban explosion. Accepting as premises
that: 1.) the urbanization process must become more
decentralized; 2.) the settlement of sparsely
populated regions must take on a more coherent human
occupation; 3.) the shortage of decent ,
unpolluted, living conditions is large; 4.)
the rapid and chaotic growth of present cities has resulted in a noisy and
confused setting where human enjoyment and fulfillment are being greatly
diminished; 5) only through full
experimentation in new settings can we draw new lines of action, we are led
to the conclusion that new cities - experimental places for a more
acceptable urban life - have to be started all over the world and that
Canada, with her high rate of urbanization together with large,
under-populated regions, is an exceptionally suitable place.
Such an experimental city, in order not to fall into the same traps of our
present cities, would have to take into account the following parameters:
1.)
It will always be centered around and for man and be a product of human
needs of expression in space;
2.)
City growth will follow a certain organizational pattern and eventually
reach a limit;
3.)
It will be a total unit completing itself, as is a building;
4.)
It must lay on the earth in such a way that a harmonious symbiotic
relationship is established between the two kinds of environments: urban and
natural (human and natural)
5)
It must be energy saving rather than waste producing and recycle most of
that same energy.
With these basic considerations, we present here a very general outline of
ideas for this city, all of which require further research and study.
This
project has been underway for over 28 years and has the following steps:
Preliminary
Phase I (completed)
Preliminary
Phase II (present stage)
Stage
I - Research and Planning
Stage
II - Construction of the experimental Urban Module/Community.
